Gumbertuskirche, Ansbach

This church was founded by St. Gumbertus himself in 750. Though originally home of a Benedictine monastery, the church transformed into a protestant center under the margrave George of Brandenburg-Ansbach in the sixteenth century. Though parts of it are medieval, it, like many neighboring churches, endured various additions as well as remodelling and reconstruction. The cellar is still home to the tombs of various margraves and their offspring–or to be offspring, as is evident in the tiniest caskets, which are smaller than a shoebox.
