A Curious Pair


Johann Christoph Ludwig Lücke carved this piece in 1742-1743. Such subject matter was relatively common in much earlier printed works, but this is the only known set of conjoined twins carved in ivory. It was much more common to show less curious bodies–such as supine women or infants that seem either asleep or calm in death.
